Together

Together

Together[ expr ] combines the fractions in an expression into a single fraction.

Usages

Together[ expr ]

Together[ expr ] writes expr as one fraction with a common denominator. Students get step-by-step guidance for this task. In a script, wrap the command in Simplify.

Example in rendered
A fraction and a variable. Simplify[ Together[2/x + y] ] 2+xyx\frac{2+xy}{x}
Two fractions with variables. Simplify[ Together[1/x + 1/y] ] y+xxy\frac{y+x}{xy}
A difference of fractions. Simplify[ Together[1/(x+1) - 1/(x-1)] ] -2(x+1)(x−1)\text{-}\frac{2}{\left(x+1\right)\left(x-1\right)}
Fractions of numbers. Simplify[ Together[1/2 + 1/3] ] 56\frac{5}{6}
Details
  • Without Simplify, the command is not calculated: in a script, Together[ 2/x + y ] stays unevaluated.
  • No fractions: an expression without fractions is not changed: Simplify[ Together[x + 1] ] gives x+1.
